 Superbad

Where did this film come from? It had to be one of the best surprise films of 2007 in terms of no-name, low budget comedy. A good script will always prevail.

Before I get into the how good the script is, let me warn you if you haven't seen this film before - especially the ladies out there! It is crude, rude and one for the boys. Why? Well one of the main characters describes how when he was young he was obsessed with drawing... that thing between guy's legs. When we are exposed to this and the extent he went to satisfy that urge, you will understand why he, as a 17 year old is the way he is in the film. His mission is to get laid. Now you might be thinking, "I've seen this all before - the guys who wanna get laid before they go to college, woopdy doo. Seen it all before". Not like this though.

The story mainly takes place in the course of one Friday, starting at school, afterwards and long into the night. Two friends with very different opinions and agendas on girls and sex get invited to a party by some hot chicks. They offer to buy booze as their way to seal the deal and the challenge for the film is set. They don't know how they're gonna get it, until their even more ugly, dorkier and skinnier friend shows up with a fake ID, calling him McLovin.

So after school, they head to the liquor store and the brave but nervous McLovin heads in with his very fake ID. The other two wait outside and everything goes pear shaped when some police arrive, and they think McLovin has been arrested. They flee, but are still committed to getting some alcohol anyway they can.

I won't reveal anymore here but just to say they end up in lots of sticky situations, and it gets very funny. The two cops, who came into it, really steal the show as they cruise the streets with McLovin in the back seat. But they're not your usual cops - in fact they do things, say things and break things that make you wish all cops were really like that.

What makes this film so great is the casting of the three young leads, who seem to have come out of nowhere. They play their roles with such conviction and enthusiasm, that you'd think they were just playing themselves. Then towards the end things gets very sentimental and the script shows a lot of heart as the characters have gone from immature young boys to slightly less immature young men - or have they? It doesn't have your traditional Hollywood ending but you won't be disappointed with Superbad, sure to become a favourite of this decade in teen movies.
