Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow

Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow

Hmmm.

What a different kind of film. I went into Sky Captain expecting a full-on, action packed blockbuster and found that I was watching a kids movie.

The visuals were definitely unlike anything I've seen before but did remind me of the period action, super hero films of the early 90's like 'The Phantom', 'The Rocketeer' and 'The Shadow'.

The performances of the 3 leads were believable but under-developed. Jude Law did fine as the the dashing pilot but Gwenyth Paltrow seemed out of place as the persistent journalist. I think Angelina Jolie could have been used more because as I watching her performance I kept thinking of her more adult films, which didn't convince me she was doing a family film.

Apart from all that, the basic storyline is that a bunch of scientists have been kidnapped by an unseen villain. Sky Captain and the journalist, Polly Perkins, team up and we find they have a history which makes things a bit awkward for them. Along the way they unintentionally find their old attractions resurfacing, but it only gets more complicated when Angelina Jolie steps in as the heroic and determined Frankie, who runs a naval base that hovers in the clouds (quite impressive). It seems they have a history too, but it's more of an adventurous one. However, Polly Perkins beings to feel jealous, and all these games are happening while they try to find the bad guy.

The history of this film is that the director spent something like 10 years in his garage, creating the special effects system that was used. You can tell he did invest a lot of time and imagination into it and the cast work well with it. Even though they were required for only 20 days of shooting in front of a blue screen, they do convince us that they are seeing what we are seeing. I suppose that was the reason for the casting of the 3 leads who show us that they are a bit more daring then people believe they are, by sacrificing their careers and reputations do a child’s film that won't be remembered as a classic, but contains visuals which will certainly stay with those who see them for a while.

If you like the old classic adventure styled films, then by all means see Sky Captain. It won't blow your socks off but it's a good way to kill 100 minutes or so and the younger viewers will certainly enjoy it.
