Saw IV

 Saw IV

Okay, another Saw movie has graced us with its presence and I must say that it has left me confused but also a little impressed.

The first Saw feels like so long ago now because all the sequels have come out and really exhausted the formula. I thought that at the end of Saw 3, that was it because Jigsaw was dead and how many more bloody entrapments could the filmmakers come up with? I guess they've read every book on medieval torture devices and serial killer ideas ever published.

Anyhow, this film opens with the graphic autopsy of the recently deceased killer and it's as real as you're ever likely to see - move over CSI. And what should be found within him? Another tape! The detective picking up the remains of the last episode of carnage listens to the tape, which is addressed to him and Jigsaw states that even though he's carked it, the mayhem will continue.

This installment brings back characters from the second film and introduces new ones and this time our main character is a street cop who is fed up with seeing all his fellow law men and women become victims of Jigsaw. Jigsaw anticipated this anger, and uses it to test him. He must encounter a race against time to save some people from being taken by traps and stuff!

This time around the deaths and traps weren't as elaborate as those seen in parts 2 and 3 which was a good change, as the focus seems to be more on the multitude of characters around and a lot of back story about Jigsaw's life and his ex-wife.

And does the ending leave space open for another sequel? Of course it does, stupid question. But you could walk out of the theatre as confused as I was with the twist ending which doesn't explain itself so clearly as the former movies. I'm still trying to work it out and it's the following day.

But maybe the answers will be revealed in the forthcoming Saw 5, which unlike the other films will not come at us this time next year, but in 2009 instead. Good. Personally I need a break from these movies and maybe the filmmakesr could take that extra time and come up with something amazing because even though this installment was a slight improvement, it's still looking tired and repetitive.

I'm not on the edge of my seat until 2009 though, there will be other gore fests to keep me occupied next year in the wake of Saw's absence I'm sure.
